Short Bio
Dr. Graves in Senior Lecturer in Art and Philosophy, and a founding member of the Academic College of Tel Aviv-Yaffo. He received his Ph.D. summa cum laude at Tel Aviv University, where he wrote his dissertation in the philosophy of art on the institutional theory of art. His supervisors were Israel Prize Laureate Professor Asa Kasher, and Professor George Dickie of the University of Illinois, Chicago, the author of the Institutional Theory. In 2010 David published “The New Institutional Theory of Art” (Common Ground Publishing, Illinois). In 1994, David joined the Academic College, teaching courses in art and aesthetics, logic and critical thinking, as well as courses centered upon major philosophers, such as Kant, Hegel and Wittgenstein. Currently, David is the editor in charge of aesthetics and philosophy of art for the new online Encyclopedia Hebraica. He is an avid amateur painter, and has just finished writing a book on a group of contemporary Israeli artists who have revived a distinctly realistic style of painting; the book is entitled “New Realism in Contemporary Israeli Art”. David used to make his livelihood as a professional rock bassist, and still stomps the occasional stage.
