We are happy to host Prof. Clemens Greiner, from the Global South Studies Center (GSSC) at University of Cologne, Germany , to share with us his research on:
Geothermal development in dryland Kenya: Visions, challenges and opportunities
Accelerating the development of renewable energy resources to avoid further CO2 emissions is a global challenge, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine has further increased the pressure for action to build a new energy regime. This presentation focuses on Kenya, a pioneer in the development of electricity supply in sub-Saharan Africa and at the same time a pioneer of large-scale development of renewable energies, particularly in the field of geothermal power generation. Like many other renewable energy sources, the exploration of geothermal fields is pushing energy and infrastructural frontiers into rural dryland areas where the land rights of local communities are poorly defined. Based on many years of interdisciplinary research on energy futures, this presentation explores the political ecology of geothermal resource extraction and provides insights into the associated visions, challenges and opportunities
